In this study, the decomposition of 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in an air atmosphere on the substrates of graphite, brominated polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene (PE) was investigated. The substrate-based kinetic models and the redox behavior of halogenated aromatic compounds in their respective reaction systems were systematically analyzed. Both kinetic models fit well with the experimental results. Thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and FT-IR analysis showed that TBP and HBCD were thermally decomposed on the substrates, and the dehalogenation process of the polybrominated phenols in the pyrolysis of PS was more complete than that of the polychlorinated phenols in the pyrolysis of PE. In addition, the radical behavior of TBP and HBCD was detected on the surfaces of graphite, PS, and PE using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. In particular, PS exhibited a much stronger antioxidant effect on the bromine radicals (B·) than the graphite surface did. The experimental results of radical trapping by ATR-FTIR revealed that the reaction of B· with PS produced the corresponding phenyl radicals (P·).
